Ordering landscaping material is simple once you know one formula. Order too little and you're making a second trip; order too much and it's sitting in a pile on your lawn. Here's how to get the amount right for gravel, topsoil, mulch, stone, and fill — and get it delivered anywhere in Dutchess County.
Length (ft) × Width (ft) × Depth (inches) ÷ 324 = cubic yards. That's it. Material is sold by the cubic yard, and this gets you there every time.
Example: A garden bed 20 ft long and 10 ft wide, mulched 3 inches deep: 20 × 10 × 3 ÷ 324 = about 1.85 cubic yards. Round up to 2 — you'll want a little extra.
A single cubic yard covers roughly:
| Depth | Area 1 cubic yard covers | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| 1 inch | ~324 sq ft | Top-dressing lawns |
| 2 inches | ~162 sq ft | Decorative stone, thin mulch |
| 3 inches | ~108 sq ft | Standard mulch beds |
| 4 inches | ~81 sq ft | New topsoil, gravel driveways |
Gravel, stone, and wet topsoil are heavy — much heavier than mulch. That affects where we can place the pile and how we protect your surfaces. We plan the drop with you so it lands somewhere solid, level, and convenient to where you're working.
Tell us the material and the area — we'll help you dial in the amount and drop it where you need it.
